Anti-virus firm F-Secure have released details of the latest virus that infects mobile phones.
Symb/Lasco.A is a Bluetooth worm that runs on Symbian based mobile phones, such as the Nokia Series 60 platform.
Lasco replicates over Bluetooth connections on Nokia Series 60 based phones and arrives as a file named velasco.sis. When the user clicks the velasco.sis and chooses to install the file, the worm activates and starts looking for new devices to infect over Bluetooth.
When the Lasco worm finds another Bluetooth device it will start sending copies of itself, as long as the target phone is in range.
The Lasco worm is based on the same source code as Cabir and is very similar to it in many ways. The main difference between Cabir and Lasco is the SIS file infection routine.
As per previous mobile phone viruses, the Lasco worm can reach only mobile phones that support Bluetooth, and are in discoverable mode. Setting you phone into non-discoverable (hidden) Bluetooth mode will protect your phone from Cabir type worms.
