It may be a very difficult time for Sony as a whole but the company has at last received some good news with confirmation it is now back on top of the Japanese hardware rankings after a period of underperformance. The PlayStation 3 narrowly outsold the Nintendo DSi and the Sony PSP but left the Xbox 360 well behind.
This is a significant move for the company which has been on the rocks for some time amid rumours of financial distress and falling sales within the group. Substantial amounts of money have been spent on the PlayStation format and while it now tops the Japanese hardware charts this needs to be rolled out across the world. The exact sales figures for the final week of February were as follows:-
PlayStation 3 sold 36,513 units
Nintendo DSi sold 35,827 units
Sony PSP sold 35,588 units
Xbox 360 sold 11,785 units
While it would be wrong to say that the above figures have been replicated in all major markets around the world there are hopes that the PS3 has now turned the corner after a difficult period during which competing games consoles have managed to steal a march on Sony. It will be interesting to see how the figures develop as the recession continues to bite around the world.
